Custom Made: Style Salvage Steve x J. A. Daye

I wrote about getting custom made pants back in November 2009 and still haven’t gotten around to taking photos. Sorry, but I am still very camera shy and also I would like to take pictures outside which at the moment is near impossible in Berlin because it’s either snowing, sleeting or freezing outside. I haven’t seen a blue sky in weeks. Anyway, I’ve decided to turn the custom made theme into a series so after writing about Mimi’s and Izzy’s tailored garbs today I’d like to introduce Steve of Style Salvage Steve and his tailor made suit from J. A. Daye in Hong Kong. For those of you who are not familiar with Steve’s blog – it is one of the best menswear blogs out there. Steve has written three great posts (I, II, III) that take you through the whole process of measuring, fitting and receiving the final product that are highly recommendable for every custom made novice.

Im November 2009 habe ich mir eine maßgeschneiderte Hose machen lassen und immer noch keine Fotos hier gepostet – schlechte Bloggerin. Ich bin halt immer noch kamerascheu und würde außerdem gerne draußen Fotos machen, was bei dem schlechten Wetter in Berlin im Moment unmöglich ist, da es entweder schneit, graupelt oder einfach a***kalt ist. Egal, ich hab mich entschlossen die Maßschneiderei-Posts zu einer Serie auszubauen und nachdem ich hier schon Mimis und Izzys Errungenschaften auf diesem Gebiet vorgestellt habe, geht es heute weiter mit Steve von Style Salvage Steve und seinem Anzug von J. A. Daye aus Hong Kong. Style Salvage Steve ist einer der besten Blogs über Männermode, den ich kenne, und dort hat Steve in drei Blog-Einträgen (I, II, III) beschrieben, wie er sich seinen ersten maßgeschneiderten Anzug gekauft hat – für alle Neulinge auf diesem Gebiet eine sehr empfehlenswerte Lektüre.

A report from the Key

Finally a quick and easy report about my visit to the Key, the trade fair for "green" fashion & sustainable lifestyle that took place in Berlin for the second time from the 20th until the 23rd of January. The location, a 19th century building complex which once housed the bakery of the Prussian army, was great. Old favorites of mine that returned to the Key were Elementum, Studio Jux, Jovoo, Slowmo and Treches. I was happy to be able to see and feel pieces from their fall/winter collections 2010/2011 as well as those of "newcomers" to the trade fair like Izzy Lane, Komodo and People Tree. Sth. that really struck me was the quality of the hand-knitted items at the Komodo and People Tree booths: they were quite coarse. The wool used for Izzy Lane's sweaters was of a higher quality but they were still a lot chunkier than what I would have expected from the photos on their website. It made me wonder whether we are just no longer used to touching and wearing 100% untreated wool when all the knit wear offered in high street shops seems to be at least 50% plastic. A real knit wear dream are Elementum’s new hand knitted pieces made with Alpaca – I cannot wait to get my hands on one of them (see photos). Lastly, since clogs are suddenly haute and trendy I just have to mention Swedish Hasbeens – if you do consider clomping around in clogs this year you should get these made in Sweden.

Es hat lange gedauert, aber jetzt kommt kurz und schmerzlos mein Bericht über meinen Besuch der Key, der „grünen“ Modemesse, die in Berlin vom 20. bis zum 23. Januar das zweite Mal stattgefunden hat. Die Heeresbäckerei, ein Gebäudekomplex aus dem 19. Jahrhundert, war ein gelungener Standortwechsel. Gefreut habe ich mich auch einige meiner Lieblingslabels vom letzten Jahr (Elementum, Studio Jux, Jovoo, Slowmo and Treches) wieder anzutreffen und ihre Herbst/Winter Kollektionen 2010/2011 bewundern zu können. Auch die „Newcomer“ der Messe wie Izzy Lane, Komodo und People Tree habe ich mir ausgiebig angeschaut. Dabei ist mir aufgefallen, wie grob die handgestrickten Wollsachen von Komodo und People Tree sind. Die Wolle der Izzy Lane Pullover war höherwertiger, die Pullover selbst sehr viel kompakter und schwerer als ich mir das anhand der Fotos auf der Webseite vorgestellt hatte. Irgendwie ist mir dazu der Spruch „sind sie zu stark, bist Du zu schwach“ durch den Kopf gegangen. Da frage ich mich, ob wir vielleicht einfach nicht mehr daran gewöhnt sind 100% unbehandelte Wolle anzufassen und zu tragen, wenn die meisten Stricksachen heutzutage zu mindestens 50% aus Plastik bestehen. Ein wahrer Traum für Strickfans sind die superweichen und multifunktionalen Teile von Elementum, die aus Alpaka-Wolle handgestrickt werden (siehe Fotos). Und zum Schluß: da Clogs ja auf einmal das neue In-Ding sind kann ich euch nur Swedish Hasbeens empfehlen – wenn schon rumstampfen, dann in diesen Clogs „made in Sweden“.

made in Germany: caro e.

Carolin Graening founded knit wear fashion label caro e. in Berlin in 2006. Her designs are hand knitted with mohair and merino wool and dyed with natural plant extracts of walnut, heather or logwood. Since 2009 she is cooperating with a hand knitting company in Poland and has handed over half of her production. The other half is produced in Germany. caro e. is sold via her own web shop (they seem to deliver only to Germany, Austria and Switzerland but it never hurts to ask if you want sth. delivered elsewhere) and in a selection of stores in Berlin, Frankfurt, Stuttgart and Vienna (see company website > shop).

Für die Strickmode von caro e. werden "ausschliesslich Naturgarne [verwendet], die unter strengen ökologischen Richtlinien behandelt werden. Der Färbeprozess läuft unter umweltfreundlichen Richtlinien und mit der Verwendung von ausschließlich natürlichen Rohstoffen. 2006 gründete die Modedesignerin Carolin Graening ihr Label in Berlin. "Seit dieser Saison Herbst/Winter 2009/2010 arbeitet sie mit einer Handstrickfirma in Polen zusammen, die viele alte Techniken beherrscht und durch einmalige Qualität besticht. Die Kollektion wird nun je zur Hälfte in Polen und in Deutschland produziert. Transparenz in Herkunft und Produktion, sowie soziale Verantwortung spielen eine bedeutende Rolle. Durch ihr Konzept werden kleine Spinnereien und traditionelle Handwerksbetriebe unterstützt und strukturarme Regionen in Norddeutschland, Berlin und Polen gefördert." (Quelle: www.unique-nature.com)
